In 2026, Meta will start grading employees on their AI skills. This isn’t the first and definitely won’t be the last employer to expect and measure how its people use AI effectively as companies around the world integrate artificial intelligence into their business processes.
According to recent data, 71% of organizations today regularly use generative AI is in at least one business function,yet only about 1% consider themselves “mature” in their AI deployment, because most still struggle to integrate AI tools in a way that delivers real value.

Companies rush to integrate AI into their business processes to avoid falling behind. The problem is that the fear of missing out often becomes the primary driver of adoption. But AI introduced without a clear purpose rarely simplifies operations and instead can result in unnecessary spending.
According to CIO, approximately 88% of AI pilots never reach production, largely due to the lack of defined business objectives and measurable outcomes. This applies equally to in-house models and SaaS solutions. To avoid failure, a project should start by defining a specific business metric, such as revenue, cost savings, or decision-making speed and assigning a responsible owner for the results.

Although 60% of organizations say AI plays a critical role in their data programs, only 12% report that their data is of sufficient quality and accessibility to enable effective AI implementation.
Companies that succeed in integrating AI into business processes almost always start with data preparation: cleaning datasets, aligning definitions across departments, establishing data ownership roles, and implementing quality control processes. This foundational work, often consuming up to 80% of a project’s timeline, is a prerequisite for building accurate, bias-free, and production-ready AI systems.
Mistake 3. Employees Unprepared to Use AI Effectively
Another common challenge companies face is a skills gap among employees.
“While organizations are eager to benefit from AI’s capabilities, a talent shortfall impedes AI integration,” said Murugan Anandarajan, PhD, professor and academic director at the Center for Applied AI and Business Analytics at Drexel University’s LeBow College of Business. “Our research findings highlight that gap, with 60 percent of respondents citing a lack of AI skills and training as a significant challenge in launching AI initiatives – a signal to business leaders that upskilling must be a strategic imperative.”
AI projects often fail because employees don’t understand how to work with the tools or how they can optimize processes. Without structured training that includes concrete steps for integrating AI into workflows, employees frequently default to familiar methods.
Mistake 4. Lack of risk management
According to a global Ernst & Young survey, nearly all large companies implementing AI have experienced financial losses due to model errors, compliance violations, or uncontrolled risks, amounting to approximately $4.4 million. Companies frequently overlook the need to anticipate risks, define usage policies, implement quality controls, and plan for error handling.
According to the report, the most common risks companies face include non-compliance with AI regulations, where AI systems are found to violate laws or internal corporate policies, and the tendency for AI to make biased decisions.
AI can both help grow a business and improve processes, but it can also become a trap, leading to serious problems for the company. Organizations should always have a risk management plan in place, as well as comply with local laws and established standards. The EU AI Act, for example, requires algorithmic transparency, accountability, and mandatory human oversight. The NIST AI Risk Management Framework provides guidance on managing AI risks that can be adapted for any organization, from startups to large corporations, and across industries. There are also international ISO/IEC standards, which offer consistent criteria for quality, safety, and governability.

Companies need to consider how the solution will be integrated into IT architecture, who will maintain the model, how data drift will be monitored, and how roles and responsibilities will be distributed across departments. This requires ongoing funding and resources.
To succeed, an organization needs to build a unified environment where all AI models, datasets, and related tools are stored, managed, and accessed, create infrastructure that ensures that AI systems operate reliably at scale, clear model update policies for when and how to retrain, validate, and redeploy models, and standardized monitoring processes.
