The agency’s 2023 threat assessment highlights how synthetic media tools are lowering costs while increasing both reach and realism.

This shift matters because identity verification systems were designed to confirm static data points. Traditional checks often focus on document authenticity, database validation or simple facial recognition matching. Deepfake-enabled fraud exploits the gaps between these systems where AI-generated faces can pass basic liveness detection and Synthetic IDs can combine real and fabricated data elements to evade cross-referencing. Financial institutions must balance customer convenience with robust fraud prevention. Overly aggressive controls risk alienating legitimate users, while insufficient safeguards leave businesses at risk of escalating losses.

Platform exposure beyond finance

Financial services often receive the most attention in fraud discussions, yet they are far from the only sector at risk. Hospitality, gaming, automotive and online marketplaces all depend on identity verification to prevent abuse, age-restricted access violations and payment fraud.
