Google NotebookLM Introduces Deep Research Feature

Google has launched Deep Research for NotebookLM, transforming it into a hybrid research platform that autonomously gathers web sources and synthesizes detailed reports.
The Deep Research feature creates structured research plans before systematically browsing websites to collect information. The system prioritizes credible sources while filtering low-quality content, then compiles findings into comprehensive reports with full source citations. Users can continue working while the AI operates in the background, with most research tasks completing within minutes.
NotebookLM offers two research modes to accommodate different needs. Deep Research delivers thorough analysis suited for complex topics requiring extensive investigation. Fast Research provides rapid scanning for immediate fact-checking and quick information retrieval. Both modes integrate directly into existing notebooks, allowing users to import sources and leverage other NotebookLM features like audio overviews and video summaries.
Expanded File Format Compatibility
The update adds support for multiple file types beyond the platform’s original Google Docs integration. Users can now import Microsoft Word documents, PDFs, Google Sheets, and batch-import Drive files through URL pasting. This expansion enables researchers to work with data tables, scanned documents, and research papers without additional conversion steps.
The enhanced file support positions NotebookLM among AI tools for education and research workflows that require diverse source material. Google indicates image support and expanded visualization templates will arrive in coming weeks.
Workflow Integration and Accessibility
Accessing Deep Research requires minimal setup. Users navigate to the source panel within their notebook, select “Web” from the dropdown menu, choose between Deep Research or Fast Research modes, and enter a detailed query. The system then deploys research agents while users continue other tasks.
Google is rolling out all features to users within one week of the announcement. The company positions this update as part of its broader strategy to enhance AI-powered research tools for both individual productivity and team-based applications.
The Deep Research feature is a shift from closed analysis systems to platforms that actively gather external information. By automating source discovery and synthesis, NotebookLM will reduce the manual effort typically required for comprehensive online research while maintaining transparency through verifiable source citations.
