Anthropic Introduces Read-Only Personal Finance Beta in Claude

Anthropic announced Personal Finance in Claude on November 5, 2026, introducing a beta that lets eligible US subscribers connect financial accounts through Plaid and ask questions about their balances, transactions and spending. The access is read-only: Claude cannot move, manage or invest money, and the feature is not designed to provide investment advice.
The rollout is gradual and limited to Pro, Max and Ultra plans in the United States. It covers Claude on the web, Claude Desktop, and the iOS and Android apps; Free, Team and Enterprise plans are excluded. A paid subscription alone therefore does not guarantee immediate access during the rollout.
Personal Finance carries no ads or sponsored recommendations, and Anthropic is not pairing it with its own credit cards, loans or savings accounts. That design aligns with the ad-free policy Anthropic published on February 4, 2026, when it said Claude’s responses would not be influenced by advertisers or contain unsolicited third-party product placements. The policy identifies enterprise contracts and paid subscriptions as Anthropic’s revenue sources, making this beta an addition to its paid consumer offering rather than an advertising or lending product.
Spending Analysis and Dashboards
In Anthropic’s worked example, a user asks where the month’s money went. Claude totals $4,309.37 across connected accounts, assigns more than half to rent and utilities and $1,024.51 to food and drink, then checks earlier months for comparison. Follow-up answers identify a membership renewal and four payments due before payday, leaving $1,393.22 in the example. The sequence shows the product combining account aggregation, categorization and conversational follow-up questions in one workflow.
Beyond monthly totals, Claude can scan across connected accounts for duplicate charges, unexpected fees and bills that have risen over time. It can explain terms such as APR before adding up the interest charged during the year. Users can also request weekly spending charts, calendars of upcoming obligations and adjustable dashboards. The Help Center lists widgets for spending, cash flow, accounts, subscriptions, upcoming bills and short insights, with controls to add, edit, remove and reorder them.
Data Access, Privacy and Accuracy
Account sharing starts with authentication through Plaid, where users choose the bank and accounts to share; Claude does not request or see the bank password. For selected accounts, it can read bank and account names, account types, usually the last four digits, balances, credit limits and up to 24 months of transactions. Transaction details include amount, date, merchant, category and the bank’s description. A full account number could still be exposed if a bank places it in an account name or transaction description.
For investment, loan and card accounts, Claude currently reads balances and credit limits, not holdings, trades, rates or terms. Conversations in the Personal Finance hub are not used to train Anthropic’s models, while activity outside the hub follows the user’s privacy settings. Financial data remains in chat history until the chat is deleted, subject to retention practices, and Claude’s hosting providers also handle bank data.
Chats that use linked accounts are designed not to be saved to memory, searched later or included in the monthly recap. Shared links can nevertheless reveal messages, replies, account figures and charts to other viewers. Published artifacts can also contain bank data and persist until deleted, even if the originating chat is removed. Unlinking a bank stops future reading but leaves figures already present in chats, artifacts and shared links until the user removes them.
Anthropic advises checking important figures against bank records because Claude can make mistakes. Balances may be a day or two old, and an account connected through two logins can be counted twice if the bank presents it differently under each login. When Claude cannot read a linked bank, spending figures omit that bank, so a budget can show more money remaining than the user actually has. Those qualifications matter because the feature’s outputs are only as complete as the account data available at the time.
Other boundaries constrain the beta. Only US banks can be linked, with a maximum of 16. Linked accounts cannot be used in scheduled tasks, Cowork tasks or Claude Code, and may not work in projects. Personal Finance is unavailable in Claude Duet, while data exports do not yet include saved dashboards. Removing the last linked bank resets the dashboard and permanently deletes its widgets, budget settings and setup answers.
Plans for Regulated Financial Services
Anthropic describes Personal Finance as a first step and is exploring ways for Claude to work alongside licensed professionals and regulated firms on larger financial decisions. It is inviting banks, wealth managers and financial services companies to help shape that work. For now, the beta gives subscribers a consolidated view of their finances without giving Claude transactional authority. Its practical value rests on the accuracy and completeness of that view, and on users understanding that shared outputs and chat history can retain financial figures after a bank connection ends.
