Morgan Stanley Selects MDOTM Sphere to Scale AI-Powered Model Portfolios

Morgan Stanley Wealth Management’s Portfolio Solutions team has selected MDOTM’s Sphere to help expand its model portfolio offering, bringing AI-assisted investment workflows to the operational challenge of maintaining hundreds of portfolios around a shared investment approach.
The selection centers on scale and consistency. Sphere will help the team carry its centralized investment view across a growing range of portfolios while accommodating the preferences and constraints each portfolio is designed to reflect. The platform will also support monitoring, customized commentary, and reporting, according to MDOTM’s announcement.
For wealth managers, the difficult part of personalization is keeping many variations aligned as markets, allocations, and client requirements change. Automating that coordination can give investment teams more capacity to maintain a broader offering and give advisors more choices to draw from.
One Investment View, Hundreds of Portfolio Variations
A model portfolio establishes a repeatable allocation approach. Running a family of models adds another problem: adjustments need to remain consistent with the central strategy while respecting the rules of each version. A change that works for one mandate may be unsuitable for another with different limits or objectives.
MDOTM says Sphere will enable Morgan Stanley’s team to scale that centralized approach across hundreds of portfolios. The announcement describes support for the investment team and advisors; it does not disclose the financial terms, a rollout timetable, or an assets-under-management figure associated with the selection.
Morgan Stanley’s wealth management offering spans investment products and planning solutions, providing the broader setting for an expanded model portfolio range. The technology’s relevance here is the work required to maintain those choices, explain changes, and keep the investment process coherent.
“Being selected by Morgan Stanley is a significant validation of what we’ve built with Sphere,” said Tommaso Migliore, co-founder and CEO of MDOTM.
How Sphere Supports Portfolio Customization
Sphere combines investment analytics, portfolio construction, and communication tools. Its Portfolio Studio lets teams define an investable universe and incorporate allocation and risk constraints into personalized portfolios. MDOTM describes support for proprietary and third-party funds, ETFs, and individual securities, with tracking-error targets used to control divergence from the chosen reference.
Tracking error measures how differently a portfolio’s returns behave relative to a benchmark or reference portfolio. In a customization workflow, controlling that divergence helps a team evaluate whether a variation still expresses its intended investment approach.
The product documentation also describes connections to execution and order-management systems, custodian platforms, and other investment infrastructure through APIs or SFTP. Those are general Sphere capabilities; the announcement does not specify which connections Morgan Stanley will use.
The distinction matters operationally. Generating a proposed allocation is one step. Getting its data into existing investment processes, checking the relevant constraints, and maintaining consistent records determines whether customization can scale beyond an isolated analysis.
Turning Portfolio Data Into Useful Commentary
Reporting grows alongside the portfolio range. Each variation can require an explanation of its positioning, changes, and performance. Repeating that work manually can become a significant burden even when the portfolios share a common strategy.
MDOTM’s StoryFolio documentation describes a staged process: a data layer calculates portfolio measures, a control layer checks the inputs, and a language model turns the resulting information into commentary. The company positions the approach as a way to ground generated explanations in portfolio data.
That design separates numerical preparation from narrative generation. It is particularly relevant to investment reporting, where fluent text needs to remain consistent with the actual holdings and calculations. The release confirms customized commentary and reporting within the Morgan Stanley scope, without detailing a particular StoryFolio configuration.
AI Adoption Moves Into the Investment Workflow
The selection illustrates a practical route for AI adoption in wealth management: coordinating the recurring work around investment decisions. Portfolio variants, monitoring, and explanations all need to move together as an offering expands.
MDOTM also describes explainability and traceable outputs in its technical discussion of Sphere. That emphasis fits a setting where investment teams need to understand the basis for an output and communicate it to others. The announcement provides no independently measured efficiency gains or investment-performance results from this deployment.
The immediate objective is clear: help a centralized team serve a broader portfolio range without losing consistency. If that workflow scales as intended, advisors gain more investment choices while the team behind those choices has a more manageable way to monitor and explain them.
