Netflix Tests AI Discover Tab with Theme-Based Recommendations

Netflix introduced AI Discover on November 3, 2026, an experimental tab in its TV app where a small initial group of members can find recommendations by selecting themes and refining the results with direct feedback.
AI Discover adds a more explicit starting point to Netflix’s existing recommendations, which are tailored using signals such as Thumbs Up selections and titles added to My List. The new tab begins with the viewing situation: a quiet night, a family movie night or only a few spare minutes can each call for a different selection.
Browsing Starts with a Theme
The first AI Discover experience presents a range of themes, each previewed by a clip from a show or movie. Some address the mood a viewer wants, with labels including “Something Light” and “Scare Me.” Others are organized around the viewing group, such as “Family Movie Night,” or the time available, as with “Quick Watches.” Themes can also reflect new or popular titles and what a member has watched recently.
Selecting a theme produces matching recommendations. More specific themes then appear so the viewer can continue narrowing the choice, while “Something Different” supplies a fresh set. The sequence turns a broad viewing intention into progressively narrower options without requiring the member to begin with a particular title.
AI helps create the themes, and the experience will explain the recommendations as the member moves through them. That places AI at the point where browsing choices are organized, while clips and subsequent theme choices provide a visible path through the available shows and movies.
Feedback Controls and a Limited Rollout
Every recommended title includes a “Tune Your Recommendations” button beside “Play” and “My List.” Members can use it to keep a recommendation or ask Netflix not to suggest that title again. Netflix says a rejection is remembered within AI Discover, preventing the same recommendation from repeatedly appearing there.
Netflix says the feature is powered by a new intelligence layer it has been building, which responds to member input in real time and continues learning. The controls connect a member’s response to an individual title with what the feature presents afterward, making feedback part of the browsing process itself.
The tab also gives Netflix a dedicated place to test discovery features. Member use and feedback will help determine which experiences are retained, improved or introduced next, and some experiments could eventually become part of the main Netflix experience. Its longer-term direction will therefore be influenced by how members respond to the early features rather than being fixed by this first themed experience.
The rollout starts in the US for members who use Netflix in English on supported TVs, with access expanding gradually to more people over the weeks following the announcement. Eligible viewers will find “Discover,” marked by a red gem icon and a “New” label, in the TV app’s top navigation.
For Netflix, the limited rollout is a test of a discovery process as much as a test of individual recommendations: reactions to the themes and tuning controls will help decide which experiments remain inside AI Discover and which become part of the main viewing experience.
