Uber Rolls Out ChatGPT Work to More Than 30,000 Employees

Uber is rolling out OpenAI’s ChatGPT Work agent to more than 30,000 employees across its global workforce starting October 22, 2026, expanding an earlier 1,000-employee pilot into a company-wide deployment inside ChatGPT Enterprise, according to OpenAI’s announcement.
The announcement describes the expansion as Uber’s first company-wide deployment of an agentic platform tailored for knowledge work. Teams across functions including operations, finance, marketing, and product will gain access, with the rollout supported by Uber’s internal AI skills library, approved integrations, and dedicated employee training.
Uber CTO Praveen Neppalli Naga framed the deployment around employee capability. “As AI transforms how we work, we want to give everyone the tools to innovate, solve problems and help shape Uber’s future,” he said in the announcement.
Integrations Across Uber’s Daily Tools
ChatGPT Work connects with applications Uber employees use daily, including Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, and Slack. OpenAI says those connections enable workers to research information, prepare meeting briefs, create presentations, analyze data, and complete workflows across applications. OpenAI describes ChatGPT Work as an agentic platform designed to take on complex, multi-step tasks and deliver finished work, operating as an agent within ChatGPT Enterprise.
GPT-6.1 Sol as the Default Model
The deployment gives Uber access to OpenAI’s portfolio of frontier models. GPT-6.1 Sol will be deployed as the default capability within ChatGPT Work, a model OpenAI characterizes as balancing frontier performance and cost efficiency. Uber teams will also be supported by OpenAI’s multimodal capabilities, including voice and image generation, which the company says gives employees flexibility to choose the right models and tools for different needs. Uber’s developers and software engineering teams will continue using Codex for software development and coding workflows.
Prior Uber–OpenAI Collaboration
The rollout extends a relationship documented in a May 6, 2026 customer story in which OpenAI detailed Uber’s use of its models for driver- and rider-facing products. That story states Uber operates 40 million trips per day, with 10 million drivers and couriers across 15,000 cities in more than 70 countries.
Among the products covered was Uber Assistant, an AI-powered assistant for drivers spanning onboarding through day-to-day earnings optimization. According to the customer story, the Assistant turns marketplace data such as earnings trends and heatmaps into positioning insights, and drivers can ask follow-up questions in plain language. Uber’s engineering teams built a multi-agent architecture that routes each request to a specialized system, using faster, smaller models for lightweight classification and larger reasoning models for more complex tasks. Uber also developed AI Guard, an internal governance layer that screens prompts and responses to promote safety, privacy, and security, enforce policies, and reduce hallucinations, the story reports.
The customer story also documents Uber’s use of OpenAI’s Realtime API for voice experiences that let riders request trips with natural speech from the app’s search bar, with the system interpreting intent and drawing on saved locations and customer context.
ChatGPT Work’s July 2026 Launch
OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Work on July 9, 2026, describing it as an agent in ChatGPT that can take action across a user’s apps and files and stay with a project for hours if needed. At launch, the product was powered by GPT-5.6 with Codex technology built in. Initial availability on web and mobile began with Pro, Enterprise, and Edu plans, expanding to Plus and Business plans over the following days.
According to the launch post, ChatGPT Work can create finished sheets, slides, docs, and web apps, and can keep projects moving through Scheduled Tasks that run once, repeat on a schedule, or monitor for changes. Enterprise and Edu administrators can centrally manage who has access, which tools the agent can connect to, and what actions it can take, while a Compliance API provides visibility into ChatGPT Work conversations and actions at scale.
“Uber is putting AI to work across its business, and bringing ChatGPT Work to tens of thousand employees is a big step toward expanding access to frontier AI capabilities and tools,” said Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s president and co-founder, in the announcement.
The companies plan to share further insights into adoption, use cases, and measurable outcomes as the rollout progresses.
