OpenAI Brings GPT-6 With Intelligent UI to All ChatGPT Tiers

OpenAI on October 7, 2026 began rolling out GPT-6 across ChatGPT, introducing a capability called Intelligent UI that lets the chatbot answer questions with fully interactive user interfaces rather than text alone. The rollout starts with paid tiers and reaches the Free and Go tiers on October 8, 2026.
In its announcement, OpenAI described Intelligent UI as a development that “marks a significant shift in how people interact with ChatGPT,” and said the new GPT-6 model in ChatGPT is built for the more than 1.2 billion people who use ChatGPT each week. The company said it introduced the first GPT-6 models for paid customers in September 2026.
OpenAI said it trained GPT-6 to compose responses using text, visuals and interactive elements, choosing how they fit together based on the question. Responses can include graphics, tappable buttons, forms, charts and interactive experiences used directly in the conversation, and the format depends on what is being asked: a comparison might work best side by side, an explanation might be easier to follow through an interactive diagram, and ChatGPT can still give a simple text answer when that is the most useful response.
Intelligent UI in Practice
The announcement demonstrates the capability with an interactive breakdown of a 7-speed bicycle, in which five connected systems (frame, wheels, drivetrain, brakes and cockpit) can be selected to explore the role each one plays. In a second demonstration, the same request for a Sunday lamb roast plan produces a text-heavy answer from GPT-5.6 Instant and, from GPT-6 Instant, a visual plan containing images of the dishes, a shopping-quantity calculator that adjusts to the number of guests, and a step-by-step cooking timeline formatted as a checklist.
OpenAI said visual and interactive explanations let users explore how something works, change an input to see what happens, or work through a problem step by step. Users can also ask ChatGPT to create a tool for the task at hand; the company’s examples include a calculator for exploring how savings could grow, a bill splitter for dinner with friends, and a game playable inside the conversation.
How Intelligent UI Works
OpenAI said it built a library of native, streamable components together with a compiler that processes the interface as the model generates it. The library gives each response a familiar design foundation while leaving the model room to decide how the pieces fit together, and the compiler lets the interface appear progressively instead of waiting for the entire response to finish.
The company said it expanded its training methods to help the model make decisions about content, layout, visuals and interaction, which included evaluating the interfaces it generates for clarity, usefulness and completeness. OpenAI said work remains ahead to improve the model’s design judgment and expand what it can create.
Faster Answers and Web Search
OpenAI said that with GPT-6, ChatGPT can now begin answering while it continues to think, interleaving thinking with answering, and that it trained the model to take the user’s waiting time into account, progressively composing an answer from its knowledge and findings up to that point. The model builds answers across multiple partial responses that each add useful information without unnecessary filler, and OpenAI said the full answer remains as cohesive and factual as one written all at once.
In an internal evaluation of high-value, everyday agentic tasks, GPT-6 Extra High begins answering in the same amount of time as GPT-5.6 Medium while achieving a better overall score than GPT-5.6 Extra High, OpenAI reported. For questions requiring web search, the company said GPT-6 Instant starts answering 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant. OpenAI also said GPT-6 makes better decisions about when to look something up and more reliably finds information that supports its answer, and that in an internal evaluation of difficult problems it correctly addressed the key aspect of the user’s question more often than GPT-5.6.
Safety Training and Availability
OpenAI said GPT-6 builds on several of Astra’s safety advances relative to GPT-5.6 Sol, and that it updated the model’s safety training based on lessons from real-world use to strengthen protections against high-risk misuse involving cyberattacks, biological threats and violence. In adversarial testing, GPT-6 showed stronger resistance to attempts to bypass its safety training, particularly attacks that adapt over multiple turns, the company said. OpenAI said the model is trained to respond safely in higher-risk scenarios while avoiding unnecessary refusals of harmless requests, using conversation history and relevant context to recognize risks that may not be apparent from a single prompt.
The company said it ran alignment evaluations throughout training, assessing honesty and responses to safety restrictions, and that GPT-6 is better at recognizing and communicating the limits of its own capabilities, including when it lacks the information or tools needed to answer. OpenAI said more detail on the results and its review is available in the system card.
GPT-6 with Intelligent UI started rolling out globally on October 7, 2026 to the ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise tiers in the Chat tab, with the rollout expanding to the Free and Go tiers starting October 8, 2026. Enterprise availability depends on workplace admin settings. GPT-6 in ChatGPT is powered by GPT-6 Sol for the Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise tiers and by GPT-6 Luna for the Free and Go tiers; OpenAI said both are tuned for everyday conversation. The update applies to the Chat experience in ChatGPT, and the models powering Work and Codex are not changing as part of this release.
OpenAI described Intelligent UI as a step toward a ChatGPT that can shape an interface around what the user is trying to do, and said that over time it wants ChatGPT to create more of the interfaces people need for everyday tasks. The company stated its belief that instead of people adapting to software, software will adapt to people.
