Anthropic Makes Claude for Government Generally Available to Agencies

Anthropic made Claude for Government generally available to federal and state agencies on September 30, 2026, moving the platform out of a public beta that began in July 2026. The platform delivers Claude’s coding and agentic work capabilities through a FedRAMP High authorized environment.

In its general-availability announcement, Anthropic said agencies on the platform receive capabilities comparable to those of its commercial customers while meeting compliance requirements, with new capabilities generally arriving on the commercial release cadence. Claude works directly with files on the desktop, and agency staff can use skills, plugins, and projects for memo creation, RFP reviews, casework, and other tasks. With Claude Code, public sector teams can build and modernize the software systems that underpin public services.

Administrators can set configuration defaults and allocate and control spending across departments, while security teams and authorizing officials receive audit logs and documentation that supports each agency’s authority to operate (ATO) process. Procurement officers can contract with Anthropic directly and award on general-availability terms.

Billing Without Seat Fees

Agencies pay no seat fees for Claude for Government. Usage is bought in fixed increments under a hard not-to-exceed cap, which keeps spending within the amount an agency has obligated. Administrators define user tiers with spend and model limits for each group, track usage by user and by model, and receive burndown alerts before a balance runs low.

Department-level administrators distribute prepaid usage to sub-agencies, and each sub-agency manages its own users. Single sign-on runs through an agency’s own identity provider, with self-serve setup in the admin portal, while SCIM group mappings determine the rate limits, dollar caps, and allowed models applied to each seat tier. A layered configuration model sets defaults for sub-agencies, covering what Claude can connect to and which features are available.

Oversight and Audit Controls

An audit log records administrative actions, which organization administrators can review, and two-person approval is required for sensitive operations on Anthropic’s end. Usage exports include metering data only, allowing agencies to respond to ATO and inspector general requests without moving sensitive material. Conversation history remains stored locally on the agency-managed device.

The July Public Beta

Anthropic released Claude Code and Claude Cowork in public beta in Claude for Government Desktop on July 7, 2026, according to its beta announcement. The beta ran on the same application used by Anthropic’s commercial customers and was delivered through a FedRAMP High authorized environment, with inference running inside that environment. On the desktop, Claude Cowork handled agency files directly, with staff able to delegate work such as memo creation, RFP reviews, casework, and decks.

Under the beta’s billing model, program offices could tie AI spend to appropriated funds using standard seats, or define custom seat tiers with their own spend and model limits. The beta’s governance capabilities included tamper-evident, hash-chained audit logs that organization administrators could review directly in the product, metering-only usage exports, and layered configuration defaults that could include instructions guiding how Claude interacts with users.

Anthropic also made its FedRAMP Secure Configuration Guide a public-facing document at the beta launch, and provided a formal FedRAMP change notification containing details associated with the change, as well as a penetration-test summary for the desktop client, under nondisclosure agreement through its trust center, with follow-up penetration-test summaries to be provided once available. Anthropic said it remained the contracted and billing party, and described the launch as making it easier for agencies to acquire, authorize, and allocate AI in pursuit of their missions.

Early Access and Deployment

The Claude Code command-line interface and Claude for Microsoft 365 are entering early access through the same environment and under the same administrative controls. Getting started does not require a separate cloud-provider relationship, and existing customers can switch to the desktop application and carry their conversation history over using an in-app import.

Anthropic publishes its FedRAMP Secure Configuration Guide through its trust center, and the application deploys through standard agency mobile device management (MDM) platforms.
