Google Opens Pre-Orders for Partner-Built Googlebook Laptops

Google opened pre-orders for Googlebook on September 21, 2026, bringing its new laptop line to market with five flagship models built by Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo at a starting price of $899. The announcement came in a post by John Solomon, Google’s vice president and general manager for Laptops, Tablets & Android Enterprise.

Googlebook is built on the Android technology stack paired with desktop foundations from ChromeOS, and it is designed to work with an Android phone from the first sign-in. Every device includes 12 months of Google AI Pro with 5TB of cloud storage and Gemini Advanced tools, three months of YouTube Premium, and Adobe Photoshop, plus a complimentary year of GeForce NOW. Google said it will support Googlebook OS with feature drops and updates for as long as 10 years.

Five Flagship Models and Shared Hardware

In a companion hardware post, John Maletis, Google’s vice president for Laptops & Tablets, laid out how the five models differ. Acer’s machine is the lineup’s only convertible, shifting between laptop and tablet. The ASUS model weighs 2.2 pounds. Dell’s entry is built around a balance of height, weight, and display, HP’s emphasizes design, and Lenovo’s carries a 15-inch display.

Across the lineup, the laptops are made from materials including aluminum, magnesium alloy, and carbon fiber. Touchscreens reach up to 2.8K OLED resolution, which Google says remains viewable outdoors in direct sunlight, and each model pairs a backlit custom keyboard with a large haptic glass trackpad. Audio configurations run up to six speakers with Dolby Atmos, alongside noise-canceling microphones.

At launch, buyers can choose between Intel Core Ultra Series 3 and Snapdragon X Elite processors, each paired with NPUs that Google rates at over 45 TOPS of on-device AI processing. Maletis’s post also notes that Google teamed with Intel, Qualcomm, and MediaTek for the line. Memory starts at 16GB of RAM across the portfolio, with some models reaching 32GB, and Google claims up to 14 hours of video playback and 16 hours of web browsing.

Google is also bringing back the Glowbar, an exterior light that activates when the device boots, sweeps to indicate the battery charge level, and animates during Gemini interactions. Developers are getting access to build their own interactive Glowbar animations.

Android Phone Integration and Built-In Intelligence

When a user signs in, an Android phone’s settings, saved passwords, Wi-Fi networks, and messages move to the laptop, backed by what Google describes as end-to-end encryption. From there, Continue On resumes phone tasks directly from the laptop taskbar, the Files app lets users view and search files and photos stored on the phone, and Cast My Apps streams phone apps into a desktop window.

In a companion post on the built-in intelligence features, Alexander Kuscher, Google’s senior director for Laptops & Tablets, wrote that Magic Pointer summons Gemini with a quick cursor wiggle. A user can highlight a marathon training plan on a web page and have Gemini schedule the runs in Google Calendar, hover over a suspicious email and ask Gemini to verify whether it is spam, or select a set of images and have Gemini visualize them together. Kuscher wrote that the feature activates only when summoned by the wiggle and otherwise stays off.

Rambler, which sits next to the Quick Insert key, turns stream-of-consciousness speech into organized writing with headers, checklists, and emoji, and it supports switching languages mid-sentence. Create My Widget generates custom desktop widgets from plain-language descriptions, with no coding experience required. Gemini Live, task automations, and proactive suggestions based on on-screen content ship out of the box, and Gemini Spark can keep processing requests in the background even with the laptop closed.

Security Architecture and Developer Platform

Googlebook runs on the same security architecture as ChromeOS, anchored by the Google Titan hardware root of trust and on-device malware detection. Google also describes its Level 5 security-certified pKVM hypervisor as a first for laptops: the hypervisor runs an isolated Linux environment with full terminal access, where users can work with Linux developer tools, pull code repositories, or execute autonomous agents.

Every Googlebook ships with Antigravity, Google’s AI agent development platform, for building, testing, and deploying apps on the device, and the terminal supports tools such as Claude Code or Antigravity CLI. The Chrome browser runs in desktop-class form with extensions, alongside millions of Android apps, many of them optimized for large screens and mouse-and-keyboard input. Native builds of Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, and CapCut are available, and streaming platforms such as Netflix and HBO Max support offline viewing.

From May Preview to Retail Shelves

Google first introduced Googlebook on May 12, 2026, presenting it as a new laptop category combining Android and ChromeOS more than 15 years after the company introduced the Chromebook. That preview named the same five hardware partners, promised devices for the fall, and disclosed that Magic Pointer was built with the Google DeepMind team.

Pre-orders are open through the Google Store, Best Buy, and other select retailers. Devices reach shelves on October 4, 2026 in the U.S. and on October 5, 2026 in Canada, the U.K., Ireland, France, Germany, and Australia.
