Lumus Licenses Waveguides to Quanta for AI Glasses Production

Lumus announced on September 1, 2026, a new licensing agreement with Quanta Computer under which the Taiwanese manufacturer will produce Lumus’ next generation of thinner, easier-to-produce geometric waveguides for augmented reality glasses. The agreement covers two product lines: the Z-30 2.0 waveguide and the new A-Lens family, which will be offered in 30-degree and 50-degree field-of-view designs.
Lumus, based in Ness Ziona, Israel, develops reflective waveguide technology, the transparent optical element that sits inside the lens of AR glasses and channels a projected image to the wearer’s eye. Quanta Computer, headquartered in Taoyuan, Taiwan, is a Fortune Global 500 original design manufacturer founded in 1988 and listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange since 1999. In fiscal year 2025, Quanta reported consolidated revenues of approximately US$68 billion and employed close to 80,000 people, with manufacturing and service facilities across Asia, the Americas, and Europe.
Waveguides Covered by the License
According to the company, the Z-30 2.0 delivers a 30-degree field of view in a thinner, lighter optical engine while increasing brightness and enabling direct bonding of prescription lenses to the waveguide. The A-Lens designs are built for lower-cost production and are approximately half the weight and thickness of previous generations while, the company said, maintaining the image quality and efficiency of its waveguide architecture.
Lumus said the two product lines continue its focus on reducing the size, weight, and manufacturing cost of AR optics without compromising the optical performance required for consumer and enterprise devices.
The new designs extend an existing catalog of geometric waveguides and optical engines. Lumus’ current Z-Lens combines a 50-degree field of view with a 1.3-millimeter waveguide, a 1024-by-1024-pixel display resolution, a 12-gram optical engine, and direct prescription-lens bonding, according to the company’s published product specifications. The same document lists the Maximus, a 50-degree engine used in military and medical devices at 1.7 millimeters thick and 20 grams, and the Vision, a 1080p top-down display for enterprise and medical customers that Lenovo selected for its ThinkReality A6.
A Manufacturing Relationship Dating to 2016
The licensing agreement builds on nearly a decade of collaboration that began with Quanta’s investment in Lumus in 2016. Since then, the companies said they have worked together to move geometric waveguide technology from early development into scalable manufacturing. Lumus describes Quanta as a long-standing supply chain partner alongside SCHOTT, and its corporate materials state that Quanta has consistently achieved yields above 95 percent in waveguide production in Taiwan, with more than 200,000 waveguides shipped to consumer, military, and medical markets.
Lumus’ manufacturing documentation describes a production process built on standard optics-industry tools and materials: glass plates are coated to create partially reflective surfaces, stacked and bonded with optical adhesive, sliced with a high-precision saw to expose the embedded mirror array, polished, shaped to the final design, and tested. The company states that a single production line can manufacture multiple fields of view with slight modifications.

C.C. Leung, Vice Chairman and President of Quanta Computer, said the companies have consistently advanced reflective waveguide technology while maintaining a focus on manufacturability and scale. He said the licensing agreement reflects Quanta’s confidence in Lumus’ waveguide portfolio and strengthens the long-term collaboration to deliver production-ready optical solutions for future AI-enabled smart glasses.
Lumus describes its geometric waveguides as significantly more luminance-efficient than competing designs, a characterization the company applies in positioning its technology for original equipment manufacturers. Its waveguides are used in several shipped products, including the Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses, Thales’ Scorpion full-color head-mounted display, Augmedics’ X2 surgical guidance system, Lenovo’s ThinkReality A6, and MediThinQ’s ScopeEye and MetaScope devices.
