The Internet Was Built for Humans. The Next One Will Be Built for AI

The companies defining the next decade of technology are less likely to be model labs, and more likely to be the ones rebuilding the foundation of the web as we know it.

The rise of AI agents won’t happen simply because models become smarter. It will depend on whether the underlying infrastructure can sustain them. Today’s web was built for human traffic, for people sending one request at a time, clicking through pages in sequence. AI agents don’t behave that way. They act in parallel: thousands of autonomous processes reasoning, pinging APIs, and reshuffling data continuously. Imagine an AI assistant coordinating hundreds of travel plans at once — researching flights, pulling live hotel data, comparing weather feeds, and rebalancing itineraries. What looks like a bot to today’s internet is just traffic to the internet of tomorrow.

That fundamental difference changes everything. The current stack, optimized for linear human traffic, is not built to support autonomous systems operating at machine speed and scale. What we need now is an internet that behaves more like a distributed organism, one that can process enormous volumes of data, stream results in real time, and scale resources up or down instantly.

The real bottleneck

While model quality, regulation, and data each play a role, infrastructure remains the biggest constraint on AI’s future.

Even modest AI agent traffic could overwhelm most modern websites. What looks like healthy engagement from humans would appear, under agent load, as a distributed denial-of-service attack. The leap in demand will be extraordinary, similar to the jump from dial-up to broadband, but multiplied by a thousand and compressed into just a few years. That’s the magnitude of what’s coming.

This moment could mark the most significant infrastructure transformation since the birth of the internet. Humanity may build systems more intelligent and interconnected than anything we’ve known, but only if the foundation is strong enough to hold.

Systems built for people can’t support machines

AI agents are data-hungry and concurrent by design. The public cloud, which was structured for predictable human traffic, isn’t built to manage billions of autonomous tasks running simultaneously.

The costs of cloud compute for large AI workloads are rising rapidly, and many are scaling back as a result. A recent Akamai-led study found that 68% of businesses are struggling with rising cloud costs, with 26% cutting back on new AI projects and others reducing budgets for cybersecurity and IT operations as compute spend balloons. 

At the same time, infrastructure demand is skyrocketing. A Deloitte survey found that respondents expect the largest short-term spikes in AI workloads to come from emerging AI cloud providers (87%) and edge platforms (78%), far outpacing traditional data-center expansion. This mismatch underscores how infrastructure built for human-scale workloads is already being stretched thin by machine-scale demand. In the first half of 2025, investment in data centers, information processing technology, and associated industries accounted for about 92% of the U.S. GDP growth. Without them, according to Harvard economist Jason Furman, growth would have been only 0.1%. 

Without faster, more flexible systems, AI agents cannot proliferate at scale, and the cost of stagnation will grow with every new deployment.

The infrastructure rebuild

As mentioned, the next wave of innovation lies in better infrastructure. The companies that dominate the next decade will be the ones re-engineering compute to meet the demands of autonomous intelligence.

In this regard, another critical barrier lies in latency. A recent analysis by The New Stack found that enterprise AI systems are struggling to scale not because the models aren’t capable, but because the back-end data and compute systems can’t keep up. Many organizations are facing variable response times and cache misses that cascade through multi-agent workflows, delays measured in hundreds of milliseconds that, multiplied across thousands of concurrent processes, add up to seconds or even minutes of downtime.

This challenge is driving a quiet but decisive shift. Many enterprises are now pulling key workloads off the public cloud to regain control over cost, performance, and data security. In parallel, a new generation of high-performance environments is emerging. It is built around multimodal databases, streaming pipelines, and containers that can start and stop hundreds or thousands of times faster than current architectures. These systems are designed for extreme parallelism: millions of agents pinging, retrieving, and reasoning simultaneously without bringing the network to a halt.

It’s the groundwork for an internet that doesn’t slow under pressure but adjusts dynamically to it, an infrastructure that behaves less like a static stack and more like a living system.

The quiet shift in market power

Infrastructure is becoming a competitive differentiator. Companies that optimize their back-ends for AI will quietly capture hidden traffic, efficiency gains, and visibility advantages. These cost and margin benefits will further compound, differentiating short-term winners from the real next-gen visionaries of a new internet. 

According to Cisco’s latest AI Readiness Index, which surveyed more than 8,000 leaders globally, the companies identified as “most AI-ready” are four times more likely to move pilots into production and 50 percent more likely to record measurable value from AI initiatives. The findings reinforce that readiness involves, as a critical component, having infrastructure designed to support continuous, intelligent operations.

Platforms that don’t adapt may appear stable to human users, but will lose relevance as AI traffic grows and systems begin interacting directly with one another. The early adopters of AI-ready infrastructure will gain more than speed. They’ll own the pathways that intelligent systems rely on to communicate, transact, and operate. Building for this hidden ‘agent experience’ will become key.

The same way mobile-first companies outpaced the web incumbents, AI-infrastructure-first enterprises will define the next phase of economic growth. Agents are already touching virtually every business and system that is connected to any piece of tech. They’re well-positioned to be the main ingredient behind the recalibration of larger and smaller economies, depending on how much value governments and large corporations will be able to capture from them.

Building for the machine economy

Besides browsing the web, AI agents will make decisions and complete transactions. Hence, they’ll need new layers of infrastructure to function autonomously: nano-transactions, service agreements, and payment rails that let machines interact and settle tasks directly.

The concept is no longer theoretical. The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta outlines a protocol (x402) where websites can respond with a “402 Payment Required” status, attach price metadata, and allow a “smart wallet” to complete the transaction invisibly. These early tests show how the emerging “machine economy” will require programmable settlement systems capable of handling billions of autonomous interactions, far beyond what today’s payment rails are built for.

The companies building these connective layers, such as agent-friendly APIs, real-time billing systems, network-level settlement, will form the foundation of this new economy. Tomorrow’s most valuable tech companies may not train the most advanced models, but they’ll operate the systems those models depend on.

This is the next phase of digital transformation: rebuilding the internet to support continuous, autonomous machine-to-machine coordination at scale.

Final thoughts

AI adoption isn’t limited by intelligence but by the systems beneath it. To realize the next era of innovation, we must rethink how the internet itself works, moving from human-paced communication to massive, parallel, always-on coordination between innumerable machines.

The builders tackling this problem today are laying the foundation for everything that comes next. And as history has shown, those who rebuild the foundation usually end up owning the future.
