It’s important to say that I’m talking about a million dollars in annual revenue. What interests me is how much of the business one person could run, and how this could include finding customers, delivering the work, and keeping those customers happy enough to stay.

Consider an independent specialist helping small companies improve their websites. Understanding the customer is one job. Turning that understanding into a convincing example is another. The specialist also needs to prepare a proposal, implement changes, check the result, and handle questions after delivery.

If each stage requires a separate contractor or several evenings of unfamiliar work, a modest engagement may become uneconomic. If AI helps the specialist complete those stages reliably, the same customer relationship could support a viable service. The opportunity comes from completing more of the job at a cost the customer can support. This is a small example that can be scaled up dramatically.

In Anthropic’s червень 2026 survey and economic index report, 82 percent of respondents said AI expanded the scope of their work. That’s an incredibly powerful and high number. A useful tool can let you take on work you previously would have had to turn down or hire someone else to do.

For a founder, that becomes more valuable when enough of those tasks fit together. Saving time on proposals is useful. Being able to deliver the service you’ve proposed is what gives you a business. I want to know how far one person can carry that customer relationship before the operation needs to grow.

In one of our recent guest pieces here at Unite, Christopher Hoyt describes this happening across his small marketing team. They’re using AI for document retrieval, presentation cleanup, reporting, and account research. What stands out to me is how ordinary those jobs are. They are the supporting work that takes up a day and makes the rest of the operation possible.

A solo founder has to connect those jobs inside a much smaller operation. The proposal, prototype, and follow-up may require different skills, but the customer experiences one service. Being able to handle more of that service yourself changes what you can offer and what it costs to deliver.

This is where I see an opening for solo operators and founders with small teams. In my own business, there is very little distance between deciding to change something and beginning the work. Better execution tools can make that short distance useful across more functions. I can explore an offer or develop an example without first assembling a separate team for every stage.

The next question is whether the business is actually worth running.

A million dollars in sales can still leave an owner with disappointing profit and a miserable schedule. I would care as much about how the work gets delivered as the headline revenue figure. How much rework is involved? How much outside help does it take? Can the owner step away without everything stopping?

Those questions belong in the business design from the beginning. Software subscriptions may be easy to budget for. Customer acquisition, revisions, and hours spent fixing a weak deliverable are easier to underestimate. An offer has to make sense after all of that work is included.

Competition can also absorb the gains. If every provider can produce a competent first draft or prototype more cheaply, customers may expect lower prices or more work for the same fee. The founder must still offer a reason to be chosen. Knowing a particular market, earning trust, or solving a difficult customer problem can matter more than access to a model everyone else can buy.

There is also a capacity limit that is easy to overlook. Each additional assignment creates decisions and obligations. If the founder must inspect every detail personally, faster production may simply create a larger review queue. As I argued in my earlier editorial on successful AI pilots, a working automation can also make an existing process harder to change. Growth depends on the design of the operation as well as its output.

I expect the strongest solo businesses to be built around customer problems their owners understand well. AI can expand what those owners are able to produce and coordinate. Their understanding of the work gives them a basis for deciding whether that expansion is useful.

An experienced operator can recognize a weak deliverable, narrow an offer that has become too broad, and know when outside expertise is worth paying for. Remaining a one-person business need not mean performing every task without help. It means choosing an operating structure that serves the customer and remains economically sound.

Better AI gives people more room to build around expertise they already have. A customer problem that once required a team may become something one experienced person can take on. For someone who has been sitting on an idea because they couldn’t afford to deliver it, that’s a big change.
